Roadmaps Security roadmaps Offensive security and assessment

Web and API Security Testing

Assess web applications and APIs for security flaws under authorisation: the OWASP methodology, REST, GraphQL and WebSocket testing, and reports developers can act on.

Estimated time: 12–24 months · At about 10 hours a week.

Offensive skills are for authorised testing only: your own lab, a practice platform, or a system whose owner has given you written permission. Testing anything else is a crime in most countries.

All topics in detail

Beginner, Time: 2–4 months

Web foundations and ethics

Skills

  • Explain the ethics and scope of web testing.
  • Understand HTTP and the browser security model.
  • Use an intercepting proxy.
  • Follow the WSTG methodology.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Install Juice Shop locally and work through its challenges with a proxy.
  • Map the WSTG checklist to a practice app and record your coverage.

Done when you can…

  • Explain the OWASP Top 10 with examples you have reproduced in a lab.
  • Test a practice app methodically with a proxy.

Beginner

HTTP and the browser model

Requests, responses, headers, cookies, CORS and the same-origin policy. Most web flaws live in the details of how these work.

Resources

Beginner

Deliberately vulnerable apps

Learn safely on apps built to be attacked, such as Juice Shop and WebGoat, in a local lab. They teach the issues without breaking the law.

Resources

Beginner

The OWASP Top 10

The industry reference for the most critical web risks. Learn each category, how to find it and how it is fixed.

Resources

Beginner

The intercepting proxy

A proxy such as Burp or ZAP lets you see and modify requests. It is the core tool of web testing; learn it well.

Resources

Beginner

Testing methodology

The OWASP WSTG gives a structured checklist from information gathering to business logic. Methodology stops you missing whole classes of issue.

Resources

Intermediate, Time: 4–8 months

Core web testing

Skills

  • Find and verify the main web vulnerability classes.
  • Test access control and authentication thoroughly.
  • Recognise request forgery issues.
  • Find business logic flaws.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Reproduce each OWASP Top 10 category in Juice Shop or WebGoat and note the fix.
  • Complete the free Web Security Academy labs on access control and authentication.

Done when you can…

  • Find and clearly explain the main web vulnerability classes in practice apps.
  • Identify a business logic flaw and describe its impact and fix.

Intermediate

Injection flaws

SQL, command and other injection let untrusted input change what a system does. Learn to find, verify and explain them, and the parameterised fixes.

Resources

Intermediate

Cross-site scripting

XSS runs attacker script in a victim's browser. Learn the types, where it hides, and how output encoding and CSP prevent it.

Resources

Intermediate

Broken access control

The most common serious finding: users reaching data or actions they should not. Test every object and action against every role.

Resources

Intermediate

Authentication and session testing

Weak login, session handling, password reset and multi-factor flaws. Learn to test them and the standards that fix them.

Resources

Intermediate

SSRF, CSRF and request forgery

Tricking a server or a user's browser into making unintended requests. Learn how each works and the defences such as tokens and allowlists.

Resources

Intermediate

Business logic flaws

Abusing the intended workflow: skipping steps, tampering with prices, replaying actions. Tools cannot find these; understanding the app can.

Resources

Advanced, Time: 6–12 months

APIs and modern applications

Skills

  • Test REST, GraphQL and WebSocket APIs.
  • Test OAuth and OIDC implementations.
  • Test single-page application front ends.
  • Write developer-ready reports.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Test a deliberately vulnerable API such as crAPI or VAmPI in a lab.
  • Complete the API and OAuth labs on the free Web Security Academy.
  • Write a full report for a lab app with reproduction and fixes.

Done when you can…

  • Assess a modern app and its API end to end in a lab.
  • Produce a report a developer could fix from directly.

Advanced

REST API testing

APIs expose the same risks plus their own: object-level authorisation, mass assignment and excessive data exposure. The OWASP API Top 10 maps them.

Resources

Advanced

GraphQL testing

GraphQL's flexibility brings introspection, nested-query abuse and authorisation gaps. Learn how to test it and how to lock it down.

Resources

Advanced

WebSocket and real-time APIs

Persistent connections need their own authentication, authorisation and input handling. Learn to test them with the right tooling.

Resources

Advanced

Testing OAuth and OIDC

Modern apps delegate auth to OAuth and OpenID Connect. Learn the flows and the common implementation mistakes that break them.

Resources

Advanced

Client-side and SPA testing

Single-page apps push logic to the browser, adding DOM XSS, client-side access control and dependency risks. Test the front end as well as the API.

Resources

Advanced

Reporting and working with developers

Write findings developers can act on: clear reproduction, impact, severity and a concrete fix. The goal is fixed code, not a long report.

Resources

Expert, Time: ongoing months

Mastery and bug bounty

Skills

  • Hunt bugs legally within programme scope.
  • Chain findings and use advanced techniques.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Pick a bug bounty programme, study its scope and document a legal test plan within it.
  • Reproduce a disclosed advanced technique in your own lab.

Done when you can…

  • Test real targets legally through bug bounty programmes.
  • Find and report chained, high-impact issues responsibly.

Expert

Bug bounty hunting

Bug bounties let you test real systems legally, within each programme's scope and rules. Read the scope carefully and always stay inside it.

Resources

Expert

Advanced and chained findings

The best testers chain small issues into serious impact and understand frameworks deeply. Keep learning from write-ups and disclosed reports.

Resources

Expert

Automation and scale

Automate reconnaissance and repetitive checks so you spend human time on logic. Build or adapt tooling responsibly, within scope.

Overview

Web applications and APIs are the most exposed part of most organisations and the most common way in. Web and API security testing assesses them, with authorisation, against a structured methodology, to find flaws before attackers do and help developers fix them.

This roadmap is a learning path for authorised and professional testing. It leans on the OWASP testing guides, uses deliberately vulnerable practice apps, and focuses on verifying real issues and writing useful reports. Test only your own applications, purpose-built practice apps, or targets in a bug bounty or engagement scope.

Why it matters

Almost every organisation runs web apps and APIs, and almost all have flaws. Skilled testers who understand modern app and API design and can explain issues to developers are in high demand, in consultancies, in-house teams and bug bounty programmes.

Typical job roles

  • EntryJunior application tester Tests web apps under supervision.
  • Mid-levelWeb and API penetration tester Runs application assessments and reports.
  • SeniorSenior application security tester Tests complex apps and leads reviews.
  • LeadApplication security lead Owns the testing approach and standards.

Prerequisites

  • How the web works: HTTP, browsers, sessions, TLS.
  • Some web development and an API, in any stack.
  • Application security fundamentals and the OWASP Top 10.
  • The law and ethics of authorised testing.
