Roadmaps Security roadmaps Offensive security and assessment

Mobile Security

Assess and defend Android and iOS apps under authorisation: the mobile platform security models, the OWASP MASVS and MASTG, static and dynamic testing, and secure mobile development.

Estimated time: 12–24 months · At about 10 hours a week.

Offensive skills are for authorised testing only: your own lab, a practice platform, or a system whose owner has given you written permission. Testing anything else is a crime in most countries.

Beginner, Time: 2–4 months

Platforms and foundations

Skills

  • Explain the Android and iOS security models.
  • Recognise the common mobile weaknesses.
  • Set up a mobile testing lab.
  • Follow the MASTG methodology.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Set up an Android emulator and a vulnerable practice app and explore its storage and manifest.
  • Map the MASVS requirements to a practice app.

Done when you can…

  • Explain the platform security models and their limits.
  • Test a practice app against the MASVS.

Beginner

The platform security models

App sandboxing, permissions, signing and secure storage on Android and iOS. The platforms do a lot of the defending; learn what they do and do not.

Resources

Beginner

The common mobile weaknesses

Insecure data storage, weak transport security, poor authentication and leaky logs. The MASVS and MASTG organise them clearly.

Resources

Beginner

Android internals

The APK format, components, the manifest, permissions and the runtime. Understanding the platform is most of Android testing.

Resources

Beginner

iOS internals

App structure, entitlements, the keychain and code signing. iOS is more closed, which shapes how it is tested.

Resources

Beginner

A mobile testing lab

Emulators, a rooted or jailbroken test device you own, and deliberately vulnerable apps. Keep testing to apps and devices you control.

Resources

Beginner

Testing methodology

The MASTG gives a structured method with the MASVS as the requirements. Methodology keeps your testing complete and consistent.

Resources

Intermediate, Time: 4–8 months

Static and dynamic analysis

Skills

  • Perform static and dynamic analysis of apps.
  • Intercept and test app traffic.
  • Use runtime instrumentation.
  • Test storage, crypto and the backend.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Run MobSF against a vulnerable practice app and triage its findings.
  • Intercept a practice app's traffic and test its API, bypassing pinning on your own device.
  • Use Frida to inspect a practice app's behaviour at runtime.

Done when you can…

  • Assess a practice app statically and dynamically end to end.
  • Produce findings covering storage, transport and the backend.

Intermediate

Static analysis

Decompile and read an app for secrets, weak crypto, insecure storage and dangerous configuration. Much of the value is in careful reading.

Resources

  • MobSF Tool, Free, OpenSecurity

Intermediate

Dynamic analysis

Run the app and observe its behaviour, files and network calls on a device you control. Dynamic testing reveals what static analysis cannot.

Resources

Intermediate

Intercepting app traffic

Proxy the app's API calls to test the backend and transport security, handling certificate pinning on your own test device.

Resources

Intermediate

Runtime instrumentation

Tools such as Frida let you inspect and change app behaviour at runtime to understand and test it, on a device you own.

Resources

Intermediate

Data storage and crypto testing

Check what the app stores and how: keychains, databases, preferences and caches, and whether sensitive data is protected.

Resources

Intermediate

Testing the backend

A mobile app is a client to an API; most serious findings are in the backend. Apply API security testing to it.

Resources

Advanced, Time: 6–12 months

Depth and secure development

Skills

  • Reverse engineer apps you are authorised to analyse.
  • Assess anti-tampering and platform features.
  • Develop apps to the MASVS.
  • Report against the MASVS.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Reverse engineer a practice app to find a hidden endpoint or flaw.
  • Build a small app that stores a secret correctly using the platform keystore.
  • Write a MASVS-mapped report for a practice app.

Done when you can…

  • Assess a complex app and report against the MASVS.
  • Build an app that meets MASVS data and transport requirements.

Advanced

Reverse engineering apps

Read decompiled code to understand logic, find hidden endpoints and spot flaws. Do this only on apps you are authorised to analyse.

Resources

Advanced

Anti-tampering and its testing

Root and jailbreak detection, obfuscation and integrity checks raise the bar for attackers. Learn how they work and how they are assessed.

Resources

Advanced

Platform security features

Biometrics, hardware-backed keystores, attestation and secure enclaves. Learn to use them in development and to assess their use.

Resources

Advanced

Secure mobile development

Build apps to the MASVS: protect data, pin or validate transport, authenticate properly, and avoid leaking through logs and backups.

Resources

Advanced

Mobile privacy

Apps collect location, contacts and identifiers, and store regulation now constrains this. Minimise collection and be transparent.

Resources

Advanced

Reporting

Write findings developers can fix, mapped to the MASVS, with clear reproduction and impact. The fixed app is the goal.

Resources

Leading mobile security

Skills

  • Run a mobile security programme.
  • Test real apps legally and research responsibly.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Write a mobile security standard and pipeline for a product team.
  • Study a mobile bug bounty scope and write a legal test plan.

Done when you can…

  • Lead mobile security across a portfolio of apps.
  • Have a record of ethical testing and research.

Expert

A mobile security programme

Set MASVS targets, embed testing in the mobile pipeline, and manage the risk across many apps and both platforms.

Resources

Expert

Mobile bug bounty and research

Test real apps legally within bug bounty scope, and contribute research and tooling. Stay strictly within each programme's rules.

Resources

Expert

Keeping up with platforms

Android and iOS change security models yearly. Follow the platform security releases and update your methodology.

Overview

Mobile apps hold personal and financial data, run on devices outside your control, and talk to backends over the network. Mobile security covers assessing apps for flaws, understanding the Android and iOS security models, and building apps that protect their data and their users.

This roadmap is a learning path for authorised testing and secure development, built around the OWASP Mobile Application Security project. Analyse only apps you own, apps built for practice, or apps within an engagement or bug bounty scope. The platform security models shape everything, so learn them first.

Why it matters

Billions of people run mobile apps, and many handle money and identity. Testers and developers who understand both platforms and can find or prevent the common flaws are in steady demand.
