Audit fundamentals

Skills

  • Explain the purpose and types of audit.
  • Design a control test and collect acceptable evidence.
  • Apply audit ethics and independence.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Design tests for five common controls and document the evidence each needs.
  • Audit a sample organisation's access reviews from provided evidence and write up the results.

Done when you can…

  • Test controls and document evidence to a reviewable standard.
  • Explain which audit type suits a given need.

Beginner

Types of audit

Internal, external, certification, attestation and regulatory audits differ in purpose, independence and output. Know which you are doing.

Resources

Beginner

Control objectives and tests

Each control has an objective and a way to test it: inspection, observation, inquiry, re-performance. Design tests that would actually catch failure.

Resources

Beginner

Evidence and sampling

Evidence must be sufficient, reliable and relevant. Learn sampling, what makes a screenshot acceptable, and how to document a test so it can be reviewed.

Resources

Beginner

Audit frameworks and standards

COBIT, ISO 19011, the IIA standards and the AICPA attestation standards shape how audits are done. Learn the ones used in your context.

Resources

  • COBIT Docs, Free, ISACA

Beginner

Independence and ethics

An audit is only worth what its independence protects. Learn conflicts of interest, confidentiality and how to hold the line politely.

Resources

Intermediate, Time: 3–6 months

Running audits

Skills

  • Plan and scope a risk-based audit.
  • Run fieldwork, including technical testing.
  • Write findings with root causes and clear reports.
  • Support ISO 27001 and SOC 2 audits.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Plan and run a mock audit of a lab environment against ten CIS Controls; write the report.
  • Re-perform a change management control from ticket to deployment and document it.
  • Rewrite three weak findings into condition, criteria, cause, effect and recommendation form.

Done when you can…

  • Run a complete audit from planning to report.
  • Produce findings that stand up to challenge from the auditee.

Intermediate

Fieldwork and interviews

Interview control owners, inspect systems, re-perform processes. Ask open questions, verify what you are told, and keep clear working papers.

Resources

Intermediate

Technical audit skills

Pull configuration, logs and access data yourself where you can. Auditors who can read a config find things interviews never reveal.

Resources

Intermediate

Findings and root causes

A finding states condition, criteria, cause, effect and recommendation. Rate it fairly and aim at the root cause, not the symptom.

Resources

Intermediate

ISO 27001 and SOC 2 audits

Certification and attestation audits follow set stages and rules. Learn them from both sides: as an auditor and as the person being audited.

Resources

Advanced, Time: 4–6 months

Assurance programmes

Skills

  • Build a risk-based audit universe and plan.
  • Run continuous and analytics-driven audits.
  • Handle regulatory examinations.
  • Use and evaluate third-party assurance reports.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Build an audit universe for a sample organisation and a three-year risk-based plan.
  • Write an analytics test that checks a whole population of access changes for approval.
  • Review a sample SOC 2 report and list the gaps a customer should worry about.

Done when you can…

  • Run an assurance programme with a risk-based plan and tracked remediation.
  • Replace sample-based tests with population tests where it matters.

Advanced

The audit universe and plan

Map everything that could be audited, rate it by risk, and build a multi-year plan. Cover the high risks often and the rest in rotation.

Resources

  • COBIT Docs, Free, ISACA

Advanced

Continuous auditing

Automated tests of controls across whole populations replace yearly samples. Build the data feeds and the analytics.

Resources

Advanced

Data analytics in audit

Query logs, access lists and transactions directly to find anomalies and test full populations. SQL and a little Python go a long way.

Resources

Advanced

Regulatory examinations

Regulators audit too, with their own rules and consequences. Learn how examinations run and how to prepare the organisation.

Resources

Advanced

Third-party assurance

Rely on others' audit reports, such as a vendor's SOC 2, correctly: read the scope, exceptions and complementary controls, not just the opinion.

Resources

Expert, Time: 6–12 months

Leading assurance

Skills

  • Report to audit committees.
  • Set audit methodology and quality standards.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Write an audit committee paper summarising a year's findings and themes.
  • Produce an assurance map showing which sources cover which risks.

Done when you can…

  • Lead an audit function trusted by the audit committee.
  • Own an assurance map across internal and external sources.

Expert

Audit committee reporting

Audit committees want the significant findings, the trend, management's response and your independent view. Learn to brief them well.

Resources

  • COBIT Docs, Free, ISACA

Expert

Assurance strategy

Combine internal audit, external audits, certifications and continuous monitoring into one assurance map so nothing is covered twice or not at all.

Overview

Auditing checks that what an organisation says about its security is true. An auditor plans the scope, tests controls against a standard, gathers evidence, and reports findings with enough rigour that others can rely on them.

The field spans internal audit, external certification and attestation audits such as ISO 27001 and SOC 2, regulatory examinations and technical assurance reviews. It needs independence, method and a good nose for the gap between the policy and the practice.

Why it matters

Customers, regulators and boards rely on audits to trust an organisation's security. Good auditors find the real gaps before attackers or regulators do, and bad audits give false comfort. The skills are in demand on both the auditing and the audited side.

Typical job roles

  • EntryIT audit associate Tests controls and gathers evidence.
  • Mid-levelIT or security auditor Plans and runs audits and writes reports.
  • SeniorAudit manager Owns the audit plan and quality.
  • LeadHead of IT audit Sets assurance strategy and reports to the audit committee.

Prerequisites

  • Security and IT fundamentals: systems, networks, identity, change.
  • Attention to detail and clear, neutral writing.
  • Understanding of at least one control framework.
  • Professional scepticism.
