Scripting and APIs for security

Skills

  • Write Python scripts that call security APIs safely.
  • Turn a manual triage process into a written playbook.
  • Build a working enrichment automation.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Write a script that takes an IP address or hash and returns verdicts from two free reputation services.
  • Write the manual playbook for a phishing report, then automate its first three steps.

Done when you can…

  • Show an automation that saves analysts real time every day.
  • Explain which steps of a playbook should never be automated, and why.

Beginner

Python for security tasks

Read files and logs, call APIs, parse JSON and write results. Small scripts that save five minutes a day are the start of every automation career.

Resources

Beginner

Working with REST APIs

Learn authentication with API keys and OAuth, pagination, rate limits and error handling. Every security tool you automate has an API like this.

Resources

Beginner

Alert enrichment

Add context to an alert automatically: IP and domain reputation, file verdicts, user and asset details. It is the safest and most useful first automation.

Resources

Beginner

Designing a playbook

Write the manual process first, step by step, with decisions and owners. Only then automate it, starting with the steps that need no judgement.

Resources

Beginner

Case management

Alerts, evidence and decisions need one place to live. Learn how case management tools track work and connect to automation.

Resources

Beginner

Handling credentials in automation

Automations hold powerful keys. Store them in a secrets manager, give each one the least access it needs, and log every use.

IntermediateTime: 3–4 months

SOAR platforms and integrations

Skills

  • Build and run SOAR playbooks on an open-source platform.
  • Integrate a SIEM, EDR, ticketing and chat tool.
  • Automate phishing response end to end.
  • Add approvals and rollback to risky actions.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Deploy Shuffle and TheHive in a lab, and connect them to your SIEM.
  • Build a phishing playbook that parses an email, checks indicators, opens a case and asks for approval before deleting messages.

Done when you can…

  • Run a playbook that handles a common alert type from start to finish.
  • Show that a containment playbook cannot isolate a critical server without approval.

Intermediate

SOAR platforms

SOAR tools give you connectors, a workflow editor, case management and logging. Learn one open-source platform well; the ideas carry over to the commercial ones.

Resources

Intermediate

Phishing response automation

The classic SOAR use case: parse a reported email, check links and attachments, find other recipients, remove the message and tell the reporter.

Resources

Intermediate

Threat intelligence integration

Automatically pull indicators from feeds into blocklists and detections, and push your own findings back. Expire old indicators so lists stay useful.

Resources

Intermediate

ChatOps and human-in-the-loop

Send a summary and approve or reject buttons to the team chat. People make the decision; automation does the clicking.

Engineering reliable automation

Skills

  • Run automation through Git, tests and staged releases.
  • Automate evidence collection and infrastructure changes safely.
  • Harden the automation platform itself.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Move your playbooks into Git with tests that run on every change.
  • Build a playbook that triggers a Velociraptor collection when a high-severity alert fires.

Done when you can…

  • Show a month of automation running with failures caught and fixed quickly.
  • Pass a review of who can change playbooks and which keys they hold.

Advanced

Automation as code

Keep playbooks and integrations in version control with reviews, tests and staged releases. Treat a broken playbook like a production outage.

Resources

Advanced

Testing playbooks

Test with recorded alerts and mocked APIs before you go live, and alert when a playbook fails or an API changes.

Resources

  • pytest DocsFreepytest project

Advanced

Automating infrastructure responses

Use configuration tools to push firewall rules, collect forensic data or rebuild systems. Ansible is a common choice in security teams.

Resources

Advanced

Automated evidence collection

Collect memory, logs and triage packages from a host as soon as a serious alert fires, before evidence disappears.

Resources

Advanced

Securing the automation platform

Your SOAR has keys to everything. Harden it, restrict who can change playbooks, and watch it as closely as a domain controller.

Resources

AdvancedOptional

AI in automation

LLMs can summarise alerts and draft responses inside playbooks. Keep them advisory, treat what they read as untrusted, and log their output.

Resources

ExpertTime: 6–12 months

Strategy and measurement

Skills

  • Set an automation strategy based on measured value.
  • Report automation results to leadership.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Write an automation roadmap for a SOC from a month of alert data.
  • Publish an integration or playbook for an open-source SOAR.

Done when you can…

  • Lead an automation programme with measured savings.
  • Have your playbooks or integrations used by other teams.

Expert

Measuring automation

Track time to triage, time to contain, analyst hours saved and failure rates. Report what changed, not just how many playbooks exist.

Resources

Expert

Sharing playbooks

Standard formats such as CACAO let organisations share playbooks. Contribute integrations and workflows to open-source projects.

Overview

Security teams repeat the same steps many times a day: look up an IP address, check a file hash, find who owns a laptop, open a ticket, reset a password. Security automation turns these steps into playbooks that run in seconds, so analysts can spend their time on judgement.

SOAR (security orchestration, automation and response) platforms connect the SIEM, EDR, identity, email and ticketing tools through their APIs. The skills are a mix of scripting, API integration, process design and knowing which actions are safe to automate.

Why it matters

Alert volumes keep growing and teams do not. Automation is how small teams keep up, and engineers who can build reliable, safe automations are in demand in every SOC.

Typical job roles

  • EntrySOC analyst who scripts Automates personal tasks and small enrichments with Python or PowerShell.
  • Mid-levelSecurity automation engineer Builds and maintains SOAR playbooks and integrations.
  • Mid-levelIntegration engineer Connects security tools through APIs and keeps the connections working.
  • SeniorSenior security automation engineer Designs the automation architecture, testing and safety rules.
  • LeadSecurity engineering manager Runs the automation and tooling team and its roadmap.

Prerequisites

  • Security Operations beginner stage: how alerts are triaged and incidents handled.
  • Python basics, including working with JSON.
  • How REST APIs work: requests, authentication and rate limits.
  • Git basics.
