How IoT devices work and fail

Skills

  • Describe IoT architecture and where it breaks.
  • Recognise the common device weaknesses.
  • Explain IoT protocols and their security options.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Set up an MQTT broker, connect a device simulator, and capture the traffic with and without TLS.
  • Assess a consumer device you own against the ETSI EN 303 645 baseline.

Done when you can…

  • Explain the OWASP IoT weaknesses with real examples.
  • Assess a device against a baseline standard.

Beginner

IoT architecture

Device, gateway, cloud and app, with data and commands flowing between them. Security has to cover every link, not only the device.

Resources

Beginner

The common IoT weaknesses

Default passwords, no updates, insecure interfaces, hardcoded keys and weak network services. The OWASP IoT list has not changed much because the problems have not.

Resources

Beginner

IoT protocols

MQTT, CoAP and HTTP over the top; Wi-Fi, BLE, Zigbee, Thread, LoRaWAN and cellular underneath. Learn their security options and common misconfigurations.

Resources

Beginner

IoT botnets and real attacks

Study Mirai and its descendants and the attacks on cameras, routers and medical devices. They show how cheap devices become infrastructure for attackers.

Resources

Beginner

IoT security regulation

ETSI EN 303 645, the UK PSTI Act, the US Cyber Trust Mark and the EU Cyber Resilience Act set baseline device requirements. Know the ones for your market.

Resources

Intermediate, Time: 3–6 months

Securing devices

Skills

  • Provision unique device identities securely.
  • Implement secure boot and signed updates.
  • Analyse and harden firmware.
  • Secure device communications and companion apps.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Build a device with secure boot and a signed update mechanism on a development board.
  • Provision per-device certificates and connect to a cloud IoT service with mutual TLS.
  • Analyse a device's firmware with EMBA and fix the top findings.

Done when you can…

  • Ship a lab device with hardware identity, secure boot and signed updates.
  • Assess a device's firmware, communications and app end to end.

Intermediate

Secure boot and firmware integrity

Verify firmware at boot against keys in hardware so tampered firmware will not run. Most microcontroller families now support it; use it.

Resources

Intermediate

Secure updates

Signed, verified, resumable updates with rollback protection, for the whole supported life of the device. Devices without updates become liabilities.

Resources

Intermediate

Firmware analysis and hardening

Extract and analyse firmware for secrets, weak services and outdated components; then remove debug interfaces and unnecessary services before shipping.

Resources

Intermediate

Securing communications

TLS or DTLS with certificate validation, authenticated MQTT, encrypted wireless pairing. Constrained devices can still do this with the right libraries.

Resources

Intermediate

Cloud and companion apps

The mobile app and cloud API are often the weakest part. Apply API and mobile security standards and protect the device-to-cloud trust relationship.

Resources

Advanced, Time: 4–8 months

Fleets, edge and industry

Skills

  • Run fleet security operations at scale.
  • Secure edge gateways and IIoT.
  • Assess devices across hardware, firmware, radio, app and cloud.
  • Manage privacy and lifecycle obligations.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Set up fleet monitoring for a set of simulated devices and detect a compromised one.
  • Run a full assessment of a lab device across all layers and write the report.
  • Write a lifecycle and update policy for a product line that meets the CRA.

Done when you can…

  • Operate a secured fleet with monitoring and safe updates.
  • Deliver a full device security assessment.

Advanced

Fleet security operations

Monitor thousands of devices for health, anomalies and compromise, rotate credentials, and push updates safely in waves. Design for the device you cannot reach.

Resources

Advanced

Edge computing security

Gateways and edge servers run real workloads near devices, often unattended. Harden them, attest them and treat them as semi-trusted.

Resources

Advanced

Industrial IoT

Sensors and gateways bridging plants to the cloud cross the OT boundary. Apply both OT segmentation rules and IoT device security.

Resources

Advanced

Assessing devices

Hardware interfaces, firmware, radio, app and cloud all need testing. Learn the methodology and test only devices and systems you are authorised to.

Resources

Advanced

Privacy in IoT

Devices collect intimate data from homes, bodies and cities. Minimise collection, protect it, and be transparent; privacy law applies fully.

Resources

Advanced

Lifecycle and end of life

Define support periods, publish them, keep SBOMs, and plan what happens to devices when support ends. Regulators now require this.

Resources

Expert, Time: 6–12 months

Leading device security

Skills

  • Set device security strategy and baselines.
  • Navigate certification and ecosystem relationships.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Write a device security strategy covering products, fleet and compliance.
  • Plan a certification route for a product in two markets.

Done when you can…

  • Lead device security across products and deployed fleets.
  • Bring products through regulatory and certification requirements.

Expert

Device security strategy

Set the security baseline for every product or deployed device class, the architecture, the lifecycle rules and the compliance path for each market.

Resources

Expert

Certification schemes

PSA Certified, ioXt, the Cyber Trust Mark and national labels prove baseline security to buyers. Choose the ones your market values.

Resources

Expert

Working with the ecosystem

Chip vendors, module makers, cloud platforms and standards bodies all shape device security. Engage them to raise the baseline.

Overview

Internet of Things devices are small computers with sensors and radios, built to a cost, deployed in huge numbers and rarely maintained. They sit in homes, hospitals, factories and cities, and they have been recruited into botnets and used as beachheads into networks.

IoT security covers the device itself (firmware, boot, keys, debug ports), its communications (wireless and application protocols), the cloud and mobile apps it depends on, and the operations of managing thousands of devices over years. Regulation now sets minimum requirements for consumer devices.

Why it matters

Billions of devices with weak defaults and no updates are an open invitation to attackers, and new laws make manufacturers responsible. Organisations deploying or building devices need people who understand the whole chain from silicon to cloud.

Typical job roles

  • Mid-levelIoT security engineer Secures device firmware, identity and updates.
  • Mid-levelEmbedded security engineer Builds security into device hardware and software.
  • SeniorIoT security architect Designs device-to-cloud security for products and fleets.
  • LeadHead of device security Owns product and fleet security strategy.

Prerequisites

  • Networking and wireless basics.
  • Some C or embedded programming.
  • Cryptography basics: keys, signatures, TLS.
  • Application security fundamentals for the companion apps and cloud.
