All topics in detail

BeginnerTime: 2–3 months

Operating system security basics

Skills

  • Harden a Windows and a Linux system against a benchmark.
  • Set up disk encryption and manage recovery keys.
  • Remove unnecessary admin rights safely.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Harden a Windows VM against the CIS Benchmark and measure your score with CIS-CAT Lite.
  • Harden a Linux VM: disable unused services, set up a firewall and enforce SSH key login.

Done when you can…

  • Explain the main hardening steps for Windows and Linux.
  • Show a before-and-after benchmark score for a system you hardened.

Beginner

Operating system security models

Users, groups, permissions, privileges and how the kernel separates them. Everything else builds on understanding who can do what.

Resources

Beginner

Hardening and benchmarks

Turn off what you do not need, set safe defaults and follow a recognised benchmark so your choices are consistent and defensible.

Resources

Beginner

Anti-malware and built-in protection

Modern operating systems include real protection. Learn Microsoft Defender's features, and the equivalents on Linux and macOS.

Resources

Beginner

Disk encryption

Full-disk encryption protects data on lost or stolen devices. Learn BitLocker, LUKS and FileVault, and how recovery keys are managed.

Resources

Beginner

Local accounts and admin rights

Most users do not need admin rights, and shared local admin passwords are an attacker's dream. Learn least privilege and tools such as LAPS.

Resources

IntermediateTime: 3–4 months

EDR and endpoint defence

Skills

  • Deploy and tune EDR on a fleet.
  • Set up application control and attack surface reduction.
  • Configure host firewalls and HIDS.
  • Harden Linux with mandatory access control and auditing.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Enable Defender ASR rules in audit mode on a VM, run safe test behaviours and review what they would have blocked.
  • Set up AppLocker or WDAC in a lab and block an unapproved program.
  • Configure auditd and AppArmor on a Linux VM and review the logs after simulated misuse.

Done when you can…

  • Show a device where common attack behaviours are blocked without a detection firing.
  • Investigate a simulated incident using EDR telemetry.

Intermediate

Endpoint detection and response (EDR)

EDR records what happens on a device and lets you detect, investigate and respond. Learn what telemetry it collects and how analysts use it.

Resources

Intermediate

Application control and allowlisting

Only letting approved software run stops most malware outright. Learn Windows Defender Application Control and AppLocker, and why allowlisting is hard to maintain.

Resources

Intermediate

Attack surface reduction

Rules that block common attack behaviours, such as Office spawning scripts or credential theft from memory, without needing a detection to fire.

Resources

Intermediate

Host firewalls and HIDS

A host firewall limits what each device accepts and sends; host intrusion detection watches for tampering. Both matter when the network perimeter fails.

Resources

Intermediate

Device and removable media control

USB drives carry malware in and data out. Control which devices can connect and what they can do.

Resources

Intermediate

Linux hardening in depth

SELinux or AppArmor, auditd, kernel settings and service isolation make a Linux server much harder to exploit and much easier to investigate.

Resources

AdvancedTime: 4–6 months

Fleet security and advanced defence

Skills

  • Build and enforce secure baselines across a fleet.
  • Turn on credential protection and boot security.
  • Secure and manage macOS and mobile devices.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Apply a Microsoft security baseline to a lab device and verify it, then detect a drift you introduce.
  • Enable Credential Guard on a VM and confirm it blocks a credential-dumping test.

Done when you can…

  • Show a secure, monitored baseline rolled out and enforced across several devices.
  • Explain how an attacker's job gets harder at each layer you added.

Advanced

Secure baselines at scale

Build, deploy and enforce a secure configuration across thousands of devices with Group Policy, Intune or a configuration tool, and detect drift.

Resources

Advanced

Credential protection

Credential Guard, LSA protection and removing cached credentials stop the credential theft that powers lateral movement.

Resources

Advanced

macOS security

Gatekeeper, System Integrity Protection, XProtect, notarisation and management profiles. Learn how Apple's model differs from Windows.

Resources

Advanced

Firmware and boot security

Secure Boot, TPM and measured boot protect a device before the operating system even loads. Learn what they prevent and how they are checked.

Resources

Advanced

Endpoint forensic readiness

Make sure devices log enough, keep it long enough and can be collected quickly, so an investigation is possible when it matters.

Resources

AdvancedOptional

Mobile and BYOD

Phones and personal devices reach company data too. Learn mobile device management, app protection and the privacy trade-offs.

Resources

ExpertTime: 6–12 months

Strategy and leadership

Skills

  • Set endpoint strategy and standards for an organisation.
  • Report endpoint risk to leadership.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Write an endpoint security standard covering Windows, Linux and macOS.
  • Automate baseline enforcement for a group of lab machines.

Done when you can…

  • Run an endpoint security programme with measured coverage.
  • Lead the rollout of a major endpoint control across a fleet.

Expert

Endpoint security strategy

Balance security, cost and user experience across the fleet, and plan the move to newer models such as secured-core and zero trust device health.

Resources

Expert

Measuring endpoint security

Track patch coverage, benchmark compliance, EDR coverage and mean time to isolate. Report what reduces risk, not tool counts.

Resources

Expert

Automating endpoint security

Automate baseline enforcement, patching and isolation so security scales without more staff.

Overview

Endpoints are where most attacks land: a phishing click, a malicious document, a stolen laptop. Endpoint and operating system security is about making each device hard to compromise and quick to detect when it is.

The work spans hardening (safe configuration, patching, removing what is not needed), protection (anti-malware, EDR, application control) and the built-in security of Windows, Linux and macOS. Done well, it stops whole classes of attack before any detection is needed.

Why it matters

A single weak laptop can be the start of a company-wide breach. Endpoint skills are needed in every organisation, and they are the foundation that detection and response build on.

Typical job roles

  • EntryEndpoint administrator Deploys and maintains endpoint protection and patches.
  • Mid-levelEndpoint security engineer Hardens systems, tunes EDR and builds secure baselines.
  • Mid-levelPlatform security engineer Owns the secure configuration of Windows, Linux or macOS fleets.
  • SeniorSenior endpoint security engineer Designs endpoint defence across the organisation.
  • LeadHead of endpoint security Sets endpoint strategy, standards and tooling.

Prerequisites

  • Comfortable administering Windows and Linux.
  • Networking basics.
  • Command line and some scripting (PowerShell, Bash).
  • A basic idea of how malware and attacks work.

Foundations of computer science Cybersecurity

Tools and technologies

  • Microsoft Defender for Endpoint Commercial Widely used EDR with a strong free documentation set.
  • Wazuh Open source Open-source HIDS, EDR and compliance monitoring.
  • osquery Open source Query endpoint state with SQL.
  • CIS-CAT Pro Commercial Checks systems against CIS Benchmarks (a free Lite edition exists).

  • NIST SP 800-207 Zero Trust Architecture Defines zero trust: never trust a request because of where it comes from, check identity and context every time.
