Roadmaps Security roadmaps Offensive security and assessment

Active Directory and Identity Attacks

Assess the identity backbone of enterprises under authorisation: Active Directory and Entra ID weaknesses, Kerberos, attack paths, and the hardening that closes them.

Estimated time: 12–24 months · At about 10 hours a week.

Offensive skills are for authorised testing only: your own lab, a practice platform, or a system whose owner has given you written permission. Testing anything else is a crime in most countries.

All topics in detail

Beginner, Time: 2–4 months

Directory foundations

Skills

  • Explain AD and Entra ID architecture.
  • Explain Kerberos, NTLM, SAML and OIDC.
  • Build and enumerate an AD lab.
  • Describe the tiered administration model.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Deploy GOAD or a similar lab and enumerate its users, groups and trusts.
  • Document how Kerberos authentication works, step by step, from your lab.

Done when you can…

  • Explain how a directory is structured and authenticated.
  • Enumerate a lab directory thoroughly.

Beginner

Active Directory architecture

Domains, forests, trusts, objects, group policy and the role of domain controllers. You must understand AD deeply before you can assess it.

Resources

Beginner

Authentication protocols

Kerberos and NTLM on-premises, SAML and OIDC in the cloud. Learn how tickets and tokens work, because the attacks abuse their design.

Resources

Beginner

Building an AD lab

Stand up your own small domain to practise safely and legally. Deliberately vulnerable lab projects make this quick.

Resources

Beginner

Entra ID and hybrid identity

Cloud identity, conditional access, and the sync that joins on-premises AD to Entra ID. Hybrid trust is a rich source of attack paths.

Resources

Beginner

Directory enumeration

Reading users, groups, permissions and trusts is the start of every assessment, and much of it uses normal, authorised queries.

Resources

Beginner

The tiering and defence model

Learn Microsoft's tiered administration and the enterprise access model first, so every weakness you find maps to a known hardening.

Resources

Intermediate, Time: 4–8 months

Attack paths and their fixes

Skills

  • Map and interpret attack paths.
  • Explain Kerberos and delegation weaknesses and their fixes.
  • Audit ACLs and credentials.
  • Pair each attack with its detection.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Run BloodHound against your AD lab and find the shortest path to domain admin, then remove it.
  • Reproduce a Kerberoasting scenario in the lab and build the detection for it.

Done when you can…

  • Map attack paths in a lab directory and propose fixes that break them.
  • Explain each weakness with both its exploitation and its detection.

Intermediate

Attack path mapping

Tools such as BloodHound reveal chains from a normal account to high privilege. Learn to read them and, for defenders, to cut them.

Resources

Intermediate

Kerberos weaknesses

Kerberoasting, AS-REP roasting and delegation abuse exploit how Kerberos works. Learn the concept, the detection and the configuration that prevents each.

Resources

Intermediate

Credential exposure

Cached credentials, service accounts and secrets in scripts give attackers their next hop. Find them and remove them; prefer managed service accounts.

Resources

Intermediate

Delegation and trust abuse

Misconfigured delegation and trusts let privileges cross boundaries. Learn how, and the settings that lock them down.

Resources

Intermediate

Permission and ACL weaknesses

Excessive rights on objects create quiet paths to domain control. Learn to audit ACLs and apply least privilege.

Resources

Intermediate

Detecting identity attacks

For every attack, learn the logs and detections that catch it. An assessor who can also tell defenders how to see it is far more valuable.

Resources

Advanced, Time: 6–12 months

Hybrid, cloud and hardening

Skills

  • Assess hybrid and Entra ID identity.
  • Detect and remove persistence.
  • Harden Active Directory to the tiered model.
  • Report attack paths with a hardening roadmap.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Assess a hybrid lab and document the on-premises-to-cloud paths and their fixes.
  • Harden your AD lab to the tiered model and re-run BloodHound to show the paths gone.

Done when you can…

  • Produce an identity assessment with ranked paths and a hardening plan.
  • Demonstrably reduce the attack paths in a lab directory.

Advanced

Hybrid identity attack paths

The sync between on-premises AD and Entra ID, and federation, create paths in both directions. Learn them and the settings that contain them.

Resources

Advanced

Entra ID assessment

Conditional access gaps, consent abuse, over-privileged applications and risky roles. Assess the cloud directory and tighten it.

Resources

Advanced

Persistence concepts and defence

Understand how attackers try to keep access in a directory so you can detect and remove it. Study this firmly from the defender's side.

Resources

Advanced

Hardening Active Directory

Tiering, privileged access workstations, LAPS, protected users, and reducing attack paths to near zero. This is the point of the whole roadmap.

Resources

Advanced

Purple teaming identity

Work with defenders to simulate identity attacks safely and verify detections. This is the most constructive use of these skills.

Identity security leadership

Skills

  • Lead enterprise identity security.
  • Build identity threat detection and response.

Hands-on projects and labs

  • Write an identity hardening programme for a large organisation.
  • Design ITDR detections mapped to ATT&CK for a directory.

Done when you can…

  • Lead the hardening of an organisation's identity layer.
  • Have a record of ethical research and responsible disclosure.

Expert

Enterprise identity security

Drive tiering, privileged access management and identity threat detection across a large estate. Identity is now the core of defence.

Resources

Expert

Identity threat detection and response

ITDR watches identity systems for attacks in progress. Design the detections and the response for your directory.

Overview

Almost every corporate network runs on Active Directory or Entra ID, and almost every serious intrusion runs through it. Identity assessment finds the misconfigurations and weak trust relationships that let an attacker move from one account to domain-wide control, so defenders can close them.

This roadmap is a learning path for authorised assessment and, above all, for defence. It pairs every attack concept with its hardening, uses purpose-built lab environments, and expects you to test only directories you own or are explicitly engaged to assess. The goal is a more defensible identity layer.

Why it matters

Identity is the number one battleground in enterprise security. Assessors who can map attack paths and, crucially, explain how to harden them are essential to both red and blue teams and to every incident responder.

Typical job roles

  • Mid-levelIdentity security analyst Assesses and hardens directory security.
  • Mid-levelAD / identity penetration tester Assesses directories under engagement.
  • SeniorIdentity security architect Designs defensible identity and tiering.
  • SeniorRed team / detection lead Simulates and detects identity attacks.

Prerequisites

  • Penetration testing fundamentals.
  • Deep Windows and Active Directory knowledge.
  • How authentication protocols work: Kerberos, NTLM, SAML, OIDC.
  • The law and ethics of authorised testing.
